What is HTML?

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), at its most basic level, is a collection of unique codes that you insert into text to add formatting and linking information. Standard Generalized Markup Language is the foundation of HTML (SGML). According to convention, every piece of HTML text has an open angle bracket (>) at the end, as in html>. This element informs a browser or HTML interpreter that the document is formatted and written in standard HTML. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, which is a free download from the Microsoft website; go to www.microsoft.com/ie/ to receive your copy, is an example of an HTML translator.
